Waiter or waitress

Duties of a waiter or waitress

  • Handle the mise en place of the dining room 
  • Greets the customer, present the menu, give recommendations and answer questions
  • Transmit orders to the kitchen
  • Serve food and drinks
  • Ensure that customers are satisfied and have a pleasant experience 
  • Handle invoicing and perform cash transactions
  • May work in a restaurant or hotel banqueting department

Qualities of a waiter or waitress

  • I enjoy being in contact with customers, anticipating their needs and creating pleasant experiences. 
  • I’m interested in the world of gastronomy and wine. 
  • I like to work efficiently.
  • I express myself well and have an excellent memory.
  • I like to be in action and work as part of a team. 
  • I have good physical stamina and a capacity to handle stress. 
  • I’m not afraid of atypical working hours. 

Experience and training 

  • You could work part-time in this type of position during your studies or internships. 
  • Training is not a prerequisite for this position. However, the types of training offered by the ITHQ will give you access to better job opportunities and help you progress in your career faster.
