Overview
This course is divided in 3 sections : Physical Geography, Urban Planning and Architecture and Public Art.
The Physical Geography section addresses the characteristic elements of the Montréal landscape, the city’s geology, topography and climate, as well as the region’s biogeography and hydrography.
The Urban Planning and Architecture section then looks at Montréal’s built landscape, the evolution of its architecture, urban planning, and particular vocabulary, along with its French, British, American and Québec influences (vernacular architecture). Particular attention is paid to the underground city and pedestrian network.
Finally, the Public Art section will reveal the city’s commemorative monuments and many modern and contemporary art pieces incorporated into its architecture.

This course will situate and introduce the work of a tour guide within the context of Montréal’s tourism industry. It will let future guides develop the attitudes and skills they need to welcome, assist, lead, and inform tourists and organize guided tours of Montréal.

This course will give students an overview of Montréal’s evolving history by situating it within the history of Québec and Canada. This history will be studied through the major periods of the city’s economic, political and socio-cultural evolution.
