Description

Explore new wine-producing regions while improving your tasting techniques!

This avant-garde training is for wine professionals who want to deepen their knowledge of techniques to taste and evaluate wines and spirits from around the world.

Designed by London’s Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET®), the WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines program employs a systematic tasting approach to describe, evaluate and recommend wines to hotel and restaurant clients. Classes are taught in English at the ITHQ, in Montreal.

Upon completing the course, students may write the exam to receive their WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines certificate, which brings candidates one step closer to being accepted to the Master of Wine (MW) program, the most prestigious certification in the wine industry.

Objectives

  • To acquire advanced skills in wine evaluation
  • To adapt and use these skills in the restaurant industry and for the sale or promotion of these products
  • To master English oenology and wine tasting terminology

Duration and schedule

  • Program start dates in the fall and winter each year
  • Total of 40 course hours
  • Classes are held on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Courses

General course content:

This level provides detailed analyses of the principal wines and spirits of the world. In each course, students will benefit from in-depth wine tastings, thereby learning to identify product style and quality.

  • Analysis of the fortified wines and spirits of the world, including numerous wine tastings

Notes:

  • For more information, please refer to the official specification
  • Students will be asked to come pick up their WSET® materials one month before the start of the course. It is strongly suggested that you read these materials before starting the program.
  • The program includes two exams: one requiring both short and developed written answers, to be corrected in London and accompanied by blind tastings, and one requiring both short and developed written answers, to be corrected by the ITHQ. The exams are held on the last day of the course.

All students must adhere to certain basic professional image rules

Eligibility

You must meet the following criteria :

  • Be at least 18 years of age before the courses begin
  • Have a good basic knowledge of the wine industry
  • Be sufficiently fluent in spoken and written English

Notes:

  • Spots are limited to 24 students per group. Students are chosen on a priority basis according to their order of registration.
  • It is strongly recommended to have completed the program WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines before enrolling in Level 3.

Cancellation

  • Tuition fees are fully refundable if students cancel their registration 10 business days before the first day of the term.
  • Tuition fees will be refunded minus a 25% administrative fee if students cancel their registration less than 10 business days before the first day of the term.  
  • No refunds will be granted after this date. 
  • The ITHQ reserves the right to cancel a course or program due to insufficient enrolment. In such cases, application and tuition fees are refunded.

  • Fees include lecture notes, wine samples and WSET® course materials (including examination and postage).
  • All amounts are in Canadian dollars.
  • All amounts listed can changed without noticed.
  • Employers subject to the Act to promote workforce skills development and recognition are entitled to submit the cost of this training program as part of the 1% of total payroll that companies must invest in employee training.

Financial aid

Scholarship for sommelier training:

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET®), in collaboration with the International Wine Challenge (IWC) offers students the opportunity to apply for a scholarship covering up to 20% of their tuition fees. However, to be eligible for the scholarship, students must be registered in the WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines program, and must have successfully completed the WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines program.

Various Canadian banks offer a student line of credit service for candidates admitted to this program.

Diploma

WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines Diploma

Candidates must meet all requirements of their chosen program.

Note for international applicants:

Admission to this program is conditional upon obtaining or holding a valid status in Canada (tourist visa, study permit, work permit, visitor record, etc.) for the duration of the program.

Note that study permits cannot be issued for part-time studies in Quebec and that the ITHQ does not provide letters of invitation for Temporary Resident Visas (TRV). For more information, consult the website of the  ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI).

HOW TO REGISTER

  • Complete the online application.
  • Include a copy of your birth certificate or photo ID (passport or driver’s license).
  • Pay the tuition fees (see Accepted payment methods section). Depending on the program, you will have to pay some or all of your tuition fees when you register online.
