Butler

Duties of a butler

  • Anticipate their employer’s needs, take care of the day-to-day management of their personal life and make their environment pleasant and hassle-free
  • Organize activities and special events
  • Perform a variety of tasks such as preparing and serving drinks, approving menus, packing and unpacking, running errands, making reservations, managing a property, managing staff and suppliers, etc.  
  • May work in hotels, luxury rental residences or for private individuals 

Qualities of a butler

  • I enjoy being in contact with customers, anticipating their needs and creating pleasant experiences. 
  • I enjoy taking care of others. 
  • I like doing housework. 
  • I have strong soft skills (interpersonal skills, honesty, dynamism, etc.)
  • I have an excellent network of contacts. 
  • I’m a good communicator and have an excellent memory.
  • I’m resourceful, versatile, thorough and organized. 
  • I am discreet and loyal in all circumstances.
  • I like everything to do with decorum and etiquette.  
  • I’m comfortable working with very wealthy people. 
  • I have a strong sense of aesthetics. 
  • I take care of my outward appearance. 
  • I have a good capacity to handle stress. 
  • I’m not afraid of atypical working hours. 
  • I ‘m open to travel for my work. 

Required experience and training

  • You need between 3 and 5 years’ experience in luxury hotels before you can become a butler. 
  • The number of years of experience required may vary depending on the type of establishment in which you work.
