Welcome to the ITHQ : Historical Background

Thirty-seven years of continued presence in the hospitality industry have allowed the Institut de tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec and its thousands of graduates to change the landscape of the tourism, hotel, and foodservice industries in Quebec.

1968 : The government of Quebec founded the ITHQ with a vision of developing a world-class tourism industry by providing  highly-skilled hospitality professionals.

1976 : The ITHQ moves into its present building on Saint Denis Street, in the heart of downtown Montreal.

1987 : The ITHQ offers a Master ofScience and Tourism Degree with the University of Toulouse-le-Mirail, France.

1988 : The ITHQ becomes a state corporation administered by representatives from the tourism, hotel, and foodservice industries.

1991 : The ITHQ joins forces with the University of Quebec in Montreal to offer a bachelor’s degree in tourism and hospitality management.

1995 : The Centre de recherche appliquée (Applied Research Centre) at ITHQ is founded in collaboration with partners from the industry.

1997 : The ITHQ signs an agreement with Hydro-Quebec with an aim to improving the energy efficiency of its electrical systems and to test new generation electric cooking equipment.

1998 : The Institute inaugurates the new Hydro-Quebec kitchen and demonstration room; both equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

2000 : A wine stewardship laboratory is installed at the Institute in partnership with the Société des alcools du Québec (the Quebec Liquor Commission), aiming at training students and professionals from the restaurant and hospitality industry.

2002 : The government of Quebec invests $39 million CA in renovating the present building and in modernizing the pedagogical equipment of the Institute.

2003 : The ITHQ foundation is established.

2004 : The Institute launches new programs with enriched course content and updated teaching-learning methods : the ITHQ Signature Training Programs.

2005 : End of the renovation work at ITHQ, and the reopening of the Institute’s hotel, as well as the inauguration of the Restaurant de l’Hôtel de l’Institut.
