Academic Term

At the ITHQ, the academic year is divided into three terms: fall (August to December), winter (January to May) and summer (May to July). Some programs, however, may be offered on a continuous basis throughout the year, or may include an internship.

Advanced Technical Program

Educational program that is an integral part of the Québec education system. Career programs are addressed to students who have completed the third or fourth year of secondary studies in Québec (9 or 10 years of study). These programs lead to a diploma of professional studies* (DEP).

*Government Diploma

Comparative Evaluation of Studies done Outside Québec

Document issued by the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles (MICC) which serves to establish equivalences between the official education system of a given country and the Québec education system, as well as the main diplomas. This is essentially a general comparison between two official education systems.

ETS

Government Diploma

Diploma issued by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québec attesting to a student’s successful completion of a given program of study.

ITHQ Signature Certificate

Diploma by which ITHQ attests that a student has successfully completed one of the Signature programs. This document recognizes the exceptional added value of education offered at ITHQ, and it is also recognized by the tourism industry as a mark of higher competence.

ITHQ Signature Program

Educational program whose content respects all the requirements of the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québec and which has added value exclusive to the ITHQ: a ‘managerial-style’ educational approach, innovative learning methods combined with internships and international job mobility. The range of Signature programs is supported by partnerships with industry and includes required internships in Québec and abroad.

MELS

Acronym for the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québec.

MICC

Acronym for the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles du Québec.

Office of the Registrar

Professional Program

*Government Diploma

Pre-University Education

Educational program addressed to students who have completed secondary studies (11 years of education in Québec), and which prepares them for various programs of study at university. The length of these pre-university programs is generally two years, or four terms. They lead to a diploma of pre-university college studies* (pre-university DEC).

*Government Diploma

Québec Certificate of Acceptance (CAQ) for Studies

Temporary Resident Visa

An official document issued by the visa offices of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) abroad, and inserted in passports as proof that the holder has met the conditions for admission to Canada as a temporary resident.

Test de français international (TFI)

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Internationally recognized tool used to assess the language skills of non-Anglophones.

Tuition Fees

Amount an individual must pay to an educational establishment in which he/she has registered for a program of study. Higher tuition fees are charged to all international students. Theses are established by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québec and are subject to change each year. Tuition fees are payable at the start of each term.

Québec students pursuing full-time studies in a public establishment other than a university are not required to pay tuition fees. By virtue of an agreement between Québec and France, any French citizen is thereby exempt from paying the tuition fees applicable to international students.

Waiving of Tuition Fees

By virtue of reciprocal agreements between Québec and certain countries, international students may be exempt from paying the tuition fees that would otherwise be applicable and can therefore benefit by paying the same tuition fees as Québec students. Please consult the list of these countries on the website of the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (http://www.mels.gouv.qc.ca/GR-PUB/m_englis.htm).
