This remedial course in English as a second language is designed for first-year students who require reinforcement, particularly with oral skills. These students must attain the Intermediate One level in order to complete the English for specific purposes courses incorporated in their program of studies geared toward the hospitality industry. The four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are covered, although emphasis is placed on oral communication skills. Students are encouraged to speak English with their teacher at all times and with their classmates during classroom activities. The language lab activities, central to every class, provide opportunities for guided individual oral practice. In addition, grammar exercises are included to foster accurate communication. Students are also encouraged to go to the Tremplin to get additional practice speaking English. This first course is an opportunity for students to acquire the oral English language skills required for ESP (English for specific purposes) courses of the hospitality industry.
